No matter you are at work or going to the grocery store, wearing masks is a way that helps protect your community and your health during the pandemic. But when you take it off, you may notice there are some breakouts bumped in the areas of your face that covered by the mask. It is known as maskne, an unfortunate side effect of the daily mask-wearing.
What is maskne?
Maskne is acne breakouts along the jaw, cheeks, and mouth caused by wearing a face mask. So Mask acne, also known as “maskne”, is a new term describing the acne caused by wearing a mask.
Causes of ‘maskne’
There are two main reasons for causing this type of acne. One is caused due to the combined effects of wearing a mask. The moisture-rich atmosphere around the mouth and the nose is an ideal environment for bacteria to flourish. Another is caused by the stress from the pandemic.
Treatment if you get it
Wash your face
If you have sensitive skin that is prone to acne, use a gentle cleanser before and after removing your mask. It helps remove oil, dirt and bacteria from the skin. It is the easiest way to reduce the risk for mask acne breakouts.
Look for a non-comedogenic moisturizer
To ensure both your face and mask clean, it is suggested to use the products without comedogenic and containing salicylic acid. It helps prevent further mask-related acne breakouts and treat your current active pimples.
