Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. Read more about breast cancer in women, including information on early signs and symptoms, risk factors and ways to prevent it.

#1 Breast cancer early signs & symptoms

While many women go to the doctor after finding a lump, every woman should also be aware of other changes to the breast or nipple.

  1. Breast or nipple pain
  2. Skin changes, such as swelling, redness.
  3. Swelling of all or part of a breast
  4. Nipple discharge other than breast milk

Having one or more of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have breast cancer. But for the sake of your health, if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you, be sure to see your doctor for a complete evaluation right away.

#2 Risk factors for breast cancer

Your risk for breast cancer is due to a combination of factors. While you can’t change some breast cancer risk factors, such as family history and aging, but there are still some risk factors that you can control.

  1. Family history of breast cancer
  2. Aging
  3. Genetic mutations

Risk factors you can change

  1. Not being physically active
  2. Taking hormones
  3. Drinking alcohol & smoke

#3 What can you do to reduce risk of breast cancer?

You can’t change some factors, such as getting older or your family history, yet there are things you can do that might lower your risk simply by taking care of your health in the following ways.

  1. Maintain a healthy weight
  2. Stay physically active
  3. Eat citrus fruits and dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, and berries
  4. Do not smoke
  5. Limit alcohol consumption
